A Super Fun Nail Polish Trend: Accent Nails!

I know I'm probably late on reporting this nail trend, but honestly, I'm not that hip. Plus, I live in the south, which naturally runs behind in matters of fashion or cosmetic trends. I am quite sure that even being late is early where I live.
I became interested in this accent nail phenomena  when I saw OPI Teenage Dream glitter polish on someone's ring finger and OPI Strawberry Margarita on the other nails. I thought this was a great way to get to wear glitter for those that don't feel comfortable or young enough to go "full-on glitter" on every nail. Instead, this method is a great way to still be able to wear glitter without overdoing it. I, myself, don't understand the concept of overdoing it and thus find it perfectly fine to wear glitter wherever I want to. But I digress.. More importantly, accent nails do not have to be reserved for a glitter only effect. Below I will give you a couple of easy tips on how to choose an accent nail shades as well as show you some examples seen on regular girls and celebrities alike.

How to Choose an Accent Nail Shade?

#1 Approach this project as you would when you put together an outfit or decorate your home. You know what shades compliment which and what looks best on you in particular, right? You really can't go wrong here. If it doesn't work, just try another shade. Its not like choosing the wrong hair color or anything.

#2 You can choose complimentary shades, i.e. the shades that are opposite one another on the color wheel, and you can also use two shades from the same color family. For example, say you choose green polish, you can choose an accent nail that is either lighter, darker, brighter, than your main polish. Since fashion took a turn into the "anything goes" category a couple of years back, you can pretty much pair anything with anything and get away with it or at least appear to be trendy even if it doesn't really work. Bottom line, you can't really lose.

#3 Choose which shades you personally like to see together. I for one love turquoise and orange. I have a floral arrangement in my house that was predominantly orange and red but when I threw in some turquoise it was perfect. Also, I wore a coral lipstick the other day and Blue Lagoon nail polish from Revlon (see my top polish picks post) and I couldn't help but notice as I was putting on my lipstick, how pretty the combo worked together when my nails were near my lips.

What Does This Trend Look Like?
As you can see, pretty much anything goes.. The fifth picture down is Vanessa Hudgens but the rest of the photos are "regular" girls. I personally love how turquoise looks with a bright green or coral if turquoise (teal?) is the predominant shade. But I also really love the giltter nail look and feel that one is super easy to accomplish!

By the way, if you are a nail polish junkie or just moderately interested in the latest colors and trends, you haven't lived until you've visited www.scrangie.com She makes every shade she wears just come to life and beg to be purchased. Seriously, go look. Those new Urban Decay shades she's wearing look 2 Die 4.

I think this is really a cute trend. On me, I prefer that the accent nail be somewhat similar (like pics 1, 6 &7). =P
